On March 4th, according to the announcement issued by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, on February 19-26, 2020, at the 34th International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector 5D Working Group (ITU-R WP5D) meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland, the Research work for 2030 and beyond (6G).

The meeting formed a preliminary 6G research schedule, including important planning nodes such as future technology trend research reports and future technology vision proposals. ITU will start the writing of the “Future Technology Trend Report”, which is scheduled to be completed in June 2022. The report describes the technical evolution direction of the IMT system after 5G, including IMT evolution technology, high spectral efficiency technology and deployment.

It is understood that the ITU plans to launch the “Future Technology Vision Recommendation” in the first half of 2021 and complete it in June 2023. This Recommendation contains the overall goals of the IMT system for 2030 and beyond, such as application scenarios, main system capabilities, etc. At present, the ITU has not yet determined the development plan of the 6G standard.

Previously, Su Xin, head of the IMT-2020 (5G) wireless technology working group of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said in 2018 that my country had already started the conceptual study of 6G networks, and the United States, Russia, the European Union and other countries and regions also started at that time. 6G network technology concept research. So from this point of view, the speed of our country’s entry is still very fast.

As an upgraded version of 5G network, the speed of 6G network will inevitably be further improved. According to the corresponding design standards, the theoretical download speed of 6G technology in the future can reach 1TB/s. The speed of 1TB/s may mean that users can download 40~50 4K HD movies in 1 second. Currently, the peak speed of 5G network design is only 10GB/s. Industry insiders said that the 6G network will open up the ground, ocean and sky communication systems to realize the interconnection between heaven and earth.

Previously, China Mobile, Samsung and other manufacturers have stated that they have started research on 6G technology internally, and Huawei’s research and development in 6G is also not behind.

Ren Zhengfei once talked about 6G technology, claiming that “We are also leading the world in 6G research, but we judge that 6G will not be put into use until ten years later (Huawei Laboratory in Ottawa, Canada has already begun to develop 6G network technology). Therefore, , the transfer of technology is not the end of our progress, we will make even greater strides when we get funding.”
